Not Your Average Throwback

Mortal Kombat is back and it's better than ever! It's out for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 and I must say, I'm blown away by this game. Mortal Kombat still keeps their combatants on their classic 2D plane, but the visionary is astonishing in the background. It does use most of the characters that are in the classic games like, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 so they are faces that brings back the fire in gamers eyes just like the first time they played Mortal Kombat. Even with all these features brought back, there’s a new twist on this classic fighting formula.

So, What's New?

Alongside the classic fighting moves that gamers already know, powerful x-ray moves have been added. Bone shattering spines and fractured skulls show the true damage you dish out on your foes. You can also augment special moves to deal extra damage as well. You can try your new power-ups and crack some skulls in the new game modes and match types that have been added! There many random scenarios that you may come against. You can find yourself battling an army of Tarkatans, or struggling just to get a hit in because the foul stench of a rotting Goro. Which you come against, you’re sure to have a blast playing.

The combos, enhanced special attacks, X-ray attacks, and unique designed tag team maneuvers are all new that makes this game one of the best. Fighters get shredded up in many ways besides fractures. Characters bruise and bleed as they take more hits, their outfits rip and get destroyed, and their fatalities are even better.

A Game, Within a Game

The best new add-on I love about the new Mortal Kombat is the Challenge mode. The craziest matches are found in the game mode! With a tower of 300 objective-based levels, this can be easily considered a game within a game. The objectives vary as you advance. Some challenges that pop up are: Test Your Might, Sight, Strike, and Luck are just a few to name.

What I like about Mortal Kombat compared to Marvel v. Capcom 3, in MvC you have to already know a good substantial amount of moves to execute, and if you're a beginner, you stand no chance. They do have a good beginner's guide but Mortal Kombat's is much better. The game shows you how to use each combatant effectively and they also force you to use them in the story mode making you more flexible and deadly.

Back to Challenge mode. If you're a MK purist, you take it here and enjoy the one-on-one fights dishing a good whoop ass one by one. The actual fight is fast so there isn't really time for you rest and set up. The AI repeatedly attacks you so don't expect an easy match. If you remember the old moves list, your most likely to execute them without even having to look at the moves list. (If you can then I salute you.)

Oh, Lookie! & Multiplayer Action

Now, I had to make a separate review about this because it is amazing. Imagine this, you're fighting Shao Kahn and your tied 1-1. The last battle and both of you are at half health. You land a perfect combo and with 3 more hits, he down for but, you're distracted by the beautiful scenery in the background. You stop and pause to look at it and Shao busts out with his special move and all you hear is, "Finish Him!" You snap out of it just in time to watch your fatality. You have to start all over again. This is what the scenery in background makes you do! You have to take eye off the fight to appreciate the background. You will see dragons battling helicopters and other dragons, snakes slithering down trees, and fighters locked in a tight battle. Some are even more gruesome to explain but it's a sure sight to see!

The multiplayer is also a promsing experience because of the game mode, King of the Hill. With this you get to watch your opponent while 'waiting in line' which gives you a chance to watch their technique and plan your attacks. You can also do a bit of trash talking to get your opponents riled up and lose concentration. It keeps the game fierce and competitive.

All in All...

If you don't have Mortal Kombat, GET IT. It refuels the fighting experience for old gamers who still go to the arcade just to satisfy their urge for the 'Original MK Experience.' Now you can do it in the comfort of your home and not worry about others waiting to play while you hog the game. It still keeps its old roots while branching new stems making it one of the best Mortal Kombat games in MK History. Hurry and get it and I'll see you watching the scenery and giving me time to dish can of whoop..ehem, see you online!
